I discovered Saweetie like everyone else on the internet – Youtube. She had gone viral for “Icy girl” , one of her many car raps. I enjoyed the freestyle ( It’s a bop!) and it aligned with my lifestyle. Harper, a University of Southern California graduate is classy, humble, smart and focused on getting the “bag”. (money) She also shows that successful women can have a strong sisterhood with other successful women. For example, she puts her real friends in her freestyle “Anti” music video.

Saweetie, Diamonte Harper, 25, Bay Area native, is creating her own lane in Hip Hop as the around the way girl. She’s a natural beauty, unapologetically bossy and goal-oriented. This is a new narrative in Hip Hop juxtaposed to the ultra-sexy vixen that may or may not dibble in sex work. ( i.e. stripper, sex worker, cam girl, etc)  who has a barbie body. Or, the narrative of gangsta barbie that enjoys stealing, killing and every other crime to make a dime. I personally can’t relate to either so I appreciate Saweetie for having the courage to be herself in an industry. The self-proclaimed “Bougie” like in her song “Good Good”

Uh, pull up bougie in the hood, hood

rapper is bringing a new perspective to the current state of Bay Area and West Coast rap where the gritty, ghetto and tales of poverty are prevalent.

I’m looking forward to watching the boss moves and power plays she will make in the industry. I’m rooting for you girl.

My favorite song from her High Maintenance EP is Agua.

All of this designer in my closet
Diamonds in my ear, I don’t hear gossip
I can balance all of this Balenciaga
I got more money than your baby father

How cool is it to use your real fiends in a music video? All your friends are beautiful and successful with their own dreams/goals. This is so refreshing and new in Hip Hop!
