Erk tha Jerk’s latest short film: The Perfect Mistake

What Erk wrote via twitter about his latest video:

Perfect mistake is a sad tale of a man willing to do anything for the “music Bizz” (played by Netta b). Self directed and produced by me

Erk Tha Jerk, continues to amaze me with his talent. He writes, raps, produces, edits and now directs. What doesn’t this guy do ?

I have been following Erk Tha Jerk since February, when he performed at Mills College.  But, I felt like this short film was good and the message was even better.  The thing I like most is the incorporation of fellow Bay Area artist Netta Brielle as a co-star.

The full explanation of the short film:

“A tale of crime and betrayal, the video captures the aftermath of what appears to have been a diamond heist and follows a Bonnie and Clyde-esque couple, played by Erk and R&B Singer Netta. And while many have made songs to serve as a metaphor for their relationship with music, here, Erk takes things one step further, serving up a video that acts as a metaphor for an artist’s relationship with the music industry that exploits and sells the music. “Netta represents the music industry in the video,” explains the Bay Area rapper. “The diamonds represent the fancy things that ‘it’ can bring. In the video, it makes me feel wanted, then, in the end, sets me up and leaves me worse off that when I started.”

One of the more interesting points to note is the fact that “Perfect Mistake” only plays throughout the first two-thirds of the clip. In the final minute, the drama is heightened through the use of a propulsive percussion track followed by thirty seconds of complete silence. Erk, himself, was the force behind the video and it’s important to recognize how the song’s lyrics mirror the creative process. “The line ‘I’m sick and you can feel me coming like the flu / I ain’t never ran, but I run it like I do,’ is something that captures the mood,” the rapper explains. “It’s a nod to people who find it hard to believe that I work hard, from producing the music to directing the video.” It can be a risk when any artist is as hands-on with his vision as Erk Tha Jerk. Here, though, congratulations are in order, as both the song and the video are a triumph. ”

Premiere of Netta Brielle’s video ” Pushin’ Away ”

Netta Brielle, a Berkeley-an who’s talent  can be seen and heard  throughout the Bay, has recently given fans a visual taste of her latest song.

N-e-t-t-a announced her visual narration for ” Pushin’ Away” via her twitter.  Netta B.  teamed up with talented Oakland born and raised director Terrance Banks.  The collaboration was a perfect example of what happens when talented bay artists come together to create art.

I like the song because it  discusses the feelings around having that special person and really wanting them. But, there is no reciprocity.  You know that relationship– the one where you “think” everything is peachy cream but in reality the other person isn’t feeling you as much as you are them. It’s a suck -y situation but Netta covers the subject with soft melodies that make you feel like it’s all good.

On that note– I really want to know who the main guy is in the video. The suspense of not seeing his face is killing me. I will just have to wait until I see this next video.

Here’s what Netta had to say about the video:

NettaBrielle I’ve heard a lot about tbanks as a director and I thought it would be dope to give him( T.Banks) opportunity to do more than a “music video”.

NettaBrielle I like to call it a “narrative” or “viral video”…we all played an active role in directing the video. Myself, pk, tbanks, & Chris.
