Friendships are beautiful

Tiny and Toya have one of the best friendships in Black Hollywood. I admire how they support one another. Many times in Hollywood, images of black women getting along peacefully and in solidarity is rare. Especially, if the black women are of different skin tones or shades.

Whenever, I see women of color working toward a common goal. I become elated.

The photo of a  positive friendship between Tiny&Toya in Black Hollywood reminded me of a documentary of young women of color in friendships with one another and dispeling myths of shadeism.

 

I met the creators and participants of the film back in February.

The film deals with women of color that deal with the affects of colonialism daily in their communities. The desciption of the film,

This documentary in short looks specifically at how it affects young womyn within the African, Caribbean, and South Asian diasporas. Through the eyes and words of 5 young women and 1 little girl – all females of colour – the film takes us into the thoughts and experiences of each. Overall, ‘Shadeism’ explores where shadeism comes from, how it directly affects us as womyn of colour, and ultimately, begins to explore how we can move forward through dialogue and discussion.
